My Grandma and Grandpa Helmkamp lived there in the early 50’s.
Just looking thru some pictures and perhaps they lived there in the late 40’s.
What is the caboose corner?
I remember the Helmkamp name, I believe they came back out a time or two to visit when my grandpa owned the farm in the 70s to early 80s. I know my grandparents enjoyed their visits. The "Caboose corner" is just to the South at a crossroad. My uncle that owned the airplane in the picture had an actual Train Caboose moved onto that corner that he eventually lived in when he was on the farm. His main home was in Detroit.
Hi Tim, thanks for sharing your memories of the Helmkamp name and their visits to your grandpa's farm! It sounds like a special place with the "Caboose corner" nearby. Do you recall any other interesting landmarks or activities in the area during the 70s to early 80s? We'd love to learn more about your experiences growing up in Kankakee County. If you have any other stories or details about that time period, we'd be thrilled to hear them!
