Holiday Park was a great place for the family and friends to swim in the summer and ski in the winter and all kinds of fun things to do year round for 40-50 years. I personally knew the owner, Bob MacNiel who was a very kind hearted and generous man. I was going to garage sales in the area and my Dad noticed a big white house up on a hill that was having a moving sale and suggested to my wife and I to ask them if the house might be for rent. We did ask and met Bob soon after to sign a lease for the 2400 sq ft home for$550/month. A great deal and a beautiful view all around with the park and ski hill to our right, the RV camping park in the back, forest land on the left and a few acres if nicely landscaped land in the front. We rented the house for nearly 5 years. I am a painter by trade and Bob gave me plenty of work to keep me busy. He built the home for his daughter but she got married and and moved elsewhere. I was visiting with my cousins in Round Lake Beach nearby when they told us that they worked many summers there as life guards and when the ski lift was operating they worked there in the winter as well.
The park has gone through many changes through the years as larger parks like 6 Flags opened in Gurnee,IL it really hurt Bob's business. He closed the ski hill and remained open during the summer months only. We moved out in 1999 and soon after the home, beautiful office, bar and entertainment rooms were demolished to make way for condos and homes. Once again progress reared its ugly head destroying a beautiful place for family fun for money. Bob suffered a major heart attack shortly after he had to sell the park to pay damages awarded to a family of a young boy who drowned many years earlier in the swimming pond. A sad end all around.
