My parents Kearney and Evelyn Halford bought this place for $5,000 in 1956. We moved from Ramsey because dad worked for Caterpillar in Decatur. The house had been a one room schoolhouse at one point. Walls were put up and it became a residence. Before the schoolhouse was built on this land there was a church here. The church burned down (at least that was my understanding) and all of the graves from the graveyard around the church were moved to Two Mile Grove Cemetery except one. The whole time we lived there a grave and gravestone were in our backyard because no family members could be found to get permission to move the grave. Finally, when my parents went to sell, they got permission to have the body moved because it was so old there was little chance they would find a living relative.
