On the right is the former Spring Valley school at what is now 7505 W Kirsch Rd, Collinsville, IL 62234. The school made the news in December 1928 when a 9 year old boy, Adrian Mersinger, set himself on fire during the Christmas program. The young boy was playing the role of Santa Claus, and while lighting candles on the Christmas tree, accidentally set his cotton Santa suit on fire. The school's teacher, Miss Louise Steinkoenig, and another lady attending the program successfully put out the fire. The boy was burned a bit, but survived. The "real" Santa Claus showed up later to distribute gifts to the kids, doing so without lighting his suit on fire (source: Edwardsville Intelligencer, 12/22/1928).
As with most of the one room schoolhouses, enrollment dwindled in the 1940s and the school was consolidated. Spring Valley was sold at auction on December 16, 1950.
