This is the former Virgin School, District No. 3 in St. Jacob Township. In 1947, the school gained some regional notoriety because of a dispute over where a local farmer's kids should go to school. The Edwardsville Intelligencer newspaper (9/6/1947) reported that Leto Streiff preferred his 4 children attend Virgin School, but his house straddled the Madison and St. Clair County lines. The distances to both Virgin School and Emerald Mound School in St. Clair County were about the same, but the road to Virgin School was a little better, so Mr. Streiff wanted his kids at Virgin School. Apparently the directors of Emerald Mound said the kids had to attend their school, and the Streiff kids had been attending that school during the week the newspaper article was written.
To solve the dispute, the County Superintendent of Schools (the newspaper article didn't say which county) was asked to contact State Superintendent of Public Instruction Vernon L. Nickell and get his opinion. Mr. Nickell's reply stated that the place a person sleeps is the determining factor in establishing their domicile. If the kids slept on the Madison County (north) side of the house, they could attend Virgin School. Apparently the kids had been sleeping on the St. Clair side of the house, but fortunately the Streiff house had another room available on the north side where the kids could sleep. Problem solved, and the kids could switch back to Virgin School.
The original Virgin School burned in the 1920s and was rebuilt. It closed in the early 1950s. The Edwardsville Intelligencer reported that the school was sold at public auction on August 4, 1951 to Walter Black for $2,185 (newspaper article dated 8/7/1951). The school is now a personal residence at 600 Cypress Road.
