This was the site of the former Hazel Dell school in section 27 of Olive Township. Current address is 7908 Engelke Rd, Alhambra, IL 62001. The site had a unique sidewalk, some of which is shown in the photo. At each end was a "Y" shape, part of which is visible in the upper right and a small portion in the lower middle near the road. Aerial images from 1955 show the concrete storm cellar that still survives today. Some of the sidewalk is also still visible near the road.
The school was annexed to the Staunton district in 1950, but a local land owner, George Best, filed a court motion for a temporary injunction for both Hazel Dell and the nearby Moultonville School on Route 66. On August 5th, 1950 voters approved both schools for annexation to Staunton. The injunction prevented the Macoupin County Superintendent of Schools, J.K. Juergensmeyer, from canvassing the returns and declaring the election result. Circuit Judge Ralph Maxwell lifted the injunction and dismissed the suit during the last week of August (Edwardsville Intelligencer, 8/30/1950).
Hazel Dell remained open for a short while, then closed and the building was empty for some time. It was sold at auction on January 29, 1955 to the Heineke family, which was the same family who donated the land for the school in the 1800s.
