Forrest Lemons' farm operation. U.S. 136 runs from center left to the upper right. I lived in one of the 4 houses that are in a row next to the large metal building. These were all taken by the State of Illinois for the right-of-way to build the 4-lane U.S. 51 that bypasses Heyworth to the west.
My uncle (Charles "Chuck") was a son of Forrest Lemons and ran the farm for his entire life. I came up from Florida and spent every summer there from 1963 (10 years old) to 1970. My uncle was a mechanical engineer and encouraged me to build, repair, and tinker, and probably led to me being an engineer today. I miss him and this farm...
Thomas, I knew Chuck and Dorothy and was buddies with Scott Lemons.
That is quite a coincidence - Dorothy was my mother's older sister. My first visit to the Farm was when their daughter Paula got married early one summer and I was an usher (10 years old) in 1962/3. They were married in the United Church downtown on Main St. I stayed on for the rest of the summer and was inseparable from Chuck after that. Their son Jim was in the Air Force and I rarely saw him - he had married a woman and Scott was born, but not sure of year. I kept coming back for 6 more years and by then I was pretty much running and driving anything on the farm. I got to know Scott as he got older, and what a tragic story that became.
When I found the photo above I almost fell out of my chair as it brought back so many memories. I can see the new shop Chuck built in the lower left after I had stopped coming up. When I was visiting we worked out of the garage (building with open door) behind the house. My big regret was that I did not come back to the Farm after I got more involved in high school, but my uncle played a huge role in my decision to become an engineer. Are you still in the Heyworth area?
