Downtown Paynes Point. The building on the right was once a general store, selling a few groceries and feed. I believe they also had a gas pump. It was operated by the Whitney Family, and closed in the mid 60's. When IL. Route 64 was in the planning stages, speculation was that it would pass through Paynes Point, and the larger building on the left was built in anticipation of this. The plans changed, and Route 64 was built several miles to the south. Today Paynes Point is a well kept little burg with an active Lutheren Church and 3 cemeteries. The one room school closed in 1958, one of the last in Ogle County to disband.
