Byron House Complex operated by Walt Williamson who owned the Wagon Wheel Resort at Rockton, IL. The large building was the Byron School, when a new school building was built, Mr. Williamson developed the Byron house. Always one to recycle building materials and antiques, this became a hotel/motel, restaurant, tavern, bowling alley, swimming pool and shopping center. At one time there was a grocery, a ladies dress shop, a furniture store, a realtor and beauty shop. It never made it as a destination, but did provide needed housing during the construction of the nuclear power plant south of town. The shops closed one by one, as did the motel eventually, and was later torn down following an auction of the antiques. For awhile this block was a park, now the fire station is on the north end of the block, a medical clinic on the southwest corner, in a building that was once the library, and a small amount is still a park, altho it is rumored it will become a commercial property soon. The homes across the street have been removed and the space is now a supermarket. The road at the top of the photo is IL. Rt. 2. One of Mr. Williamson's antiques, a clock that was once in Rockford, IL can be seen in the upper part of the photo along the highway. It is now in storage.
