The former Illinois Division of Highways (later IDOT) weigh scale station is seen in the background at the upper right portion of the photo. Illinois State Route 14 is also in the background. From 1947 to 1974, IL 14 had been designated as US 460, along with several other highways passing through the towns of McLeansboro, Nashville and Freeburg. This completed a route from New Harmony, Indiana to St. Louis, Missouri. Since this predated Interstate 64, US 460 was one of the main east-west thoroughfares through southern Illinois. The weigh scale station seen here was located here to inspect incoming west-bound truck traffic on this busy route.
