This is Lincoln Way Central High School on Rt. 30 (Lincoln Highway) and Schoolhouse Road in New Lenox. On the Southwest (bottom right) corner of the intersection sits Schmuhl School - originally a one-room schoolhouse that later had three additional classrooms added. It was sold to a developer in 1999 to make way for a Walgreens Drug Store. The three class rooms were demolished and the one-room schoolhouse was moved across the street into the Hickory Creek Barrens Forest Preserve where it has been restored and is operated by the New Lenox Area Historical Society. It is an official Will County Landmark.
Schmuhl School was originally located on the Southeast corner of Rt. 30 and Schoolhouse Road in New Lenox. When the Grade School District sold the property, the building was given to the New Lenox Area Historical Society. It had to be moved. The Northeast corner of the intersection belonged to the Forest Preserve District of Will County and they permitted the school to be relocated on five acres across the street from it's original site. The school has been turned into a one-room schoolhouse museum that area students visit for a day to learn about the area and what school was like in the 1930's
