The flight map is pretty far off. This is the old Metz School in the far eastern part of Steuben County. My father, Stanley Gilbert, graduated from here in 1955; my grandparents, Donald and Lelah Eyster Gilbert, graduated from here in 1932. The high school closed in 1957 and the elementary closed in 1959. Sneaking in here and exploring was an exciting part of my childhood; one of my cousins and I once hurt ourselves by climbing up on the roof and trying to jump down on our bicycles like cowboys jumping from saloon balconies onto their steeds in Westerns.
