This was my grandparents' farm house in Madrid IA, until they passed away in 1991 and 1996, respectively. My y sister and I spent many summers here in the 80s and early 90s, and we had a number of horses, chickens, pigs, etc. Memories of days long past!
I lived in Madrid 1970-71 and I rode my pony down this road many times! Always seemed like the road had sliced the farm in half.
Hi! Thank you for sharing your memories from the area. It's always fascinating to hear about people's personal connections to the aerial photos on Vintage Aerial. Do you happen to remember any other notable landmarks or features from that time period? Maybe something that has since changed? Thank you for taking the time to comment! -Alexis
Much has changed in my little area of town. Edgewood Park had a horse show ring where the newer baseball diamond is at 8th and S. Main. My pony and I won a blue ribbon there in 1971. Our acreage was at the end of W. 7th street. An old farm house with a white fenced pasture and small stable, with apple trees and peonie bushes in the yard. And a dilapidated outhouse! The farmhouse had a tiny add-on toilet and stand up shower stall at the back. The only sink was in the kitchen. There were just cornfields next door, no new development or houses. I spent every spare moment with my pony, whether taking a long ride or reading a book backwards on his back while he grazed. It was a perfect dream place for a horse crazy kid after years of wishing and saving for a pony of my own. It was only a year, and then we moved to Southern California of all places, but I’ll never forget it.
