Spaulding Library, Sebago, Maine
The Spaulding Memorial Library (282 Sebago Road, Route 114) in East Sebago has been serving residents of the area since 1925. Built on land donated by Harry Fitch, the library was fully funded by Leon C. Spaulding, a long-time summer resident of Sebago (owner of nearby Rockcraft Lodge estate.) Leon and his two brothers owned Spaulding Fibre Company of NH (formerly J. Spaulding & Sons Company), makers of fiber board products, that was started by their father, Jonas Spaulding. Most of the structure and the fireplace was built of fieldstone made from local stonewalls. Construction began in 1923 and was completed in 1925 at a cost of around $25,000 ($375,000 in today's dollars.)
Unfortunately, Mr. Spaulding did not live to see the finished library. He passed away in Sebago on September 11, 1924. His wife, Dorothy saw to its completion and served as one of its first Trustees.
