This farm use to belong to Earl and Virginia Cross, my grandparents. The farm was a professional horse training and racing facility. They raced horses at Thisltedown Race Track in Cleveland and were among few African-American owners and trainers. I spent summers here during my child and teenage years. I would come from Los Angeles and work in summers. This image was commissioned by my grandfather and was framed in the den of my grandparents second home in Shaker Heights a suburb of Cleveland. This place and my grandparents love and instruction were very formative for me as a geoscientist and a person.
