The property was owned by Nathaniel Johnson as early as 1851 and the dwelling, having undergone several alterations, may have been constructed at that time, though it was more likely built by either Elijah Johnson or his younger brother Sylvester Johnson, both of which appear on the 1874 and 1896 atlas maps of Lagrange Township. The dwelling is depicted on Elijah's property in 1874, and on Sylvester's in 1896.
