JF Burns Elementary school on Columbia Rd.

JF Burns opened in 1968 for elementary grades 1-3 in the Kings Mills school district. The open field in the top left of the photo was a play area/baseball field. In 1968 across the street on Columbia Road, the Landen Lake was not yet in existence. It is a man-made lake/pond created by building an earthen dam at the north/east end and building an "overflow" which is under the concrete pad at this end of the lake. It was all pasture/farmland across the street from JF Burns when built and the creation of the lake was for the residential homes development surrounding it today. The area was still called 20 Mile Stand in 1968. It took the development of the area to change the area to become known as Landen. There is a small creek that runs behind JF Burns (originally called Espy creek) which flows into the man-made lake. I believe Espy owned much of the land on the north and east side of the intersection of Columbia Road and Montgomery Road and sold it to a family called Landen. David Espy was one of three people (Jeremiah Morrow and I believe Thomas? Parkhill) that surveyed and platted much of this area of Warren County. I believe all 3 of these men are buried in Union Cemetery at the intersection of Union Cemetery Road and US 22/3 (Montgomery Road).
