Novice High School,
Though no one seems to know just when the Novice school began. The building had a dirt floor, a big fireplace and split logs for seats. This building burned in 1882. Another was built on what is known as the Finlay place in 1883. According to a brochure advertising the new town, a modern four room brick school building was occupied sometime between 1914-16. In the townspeople boasted that it had cost $5,000, and no finer could be found. Novice became the envy of the entire county when a modern gym was completed in 1934, (the second gym in the county). In 1963 Novice built a new school and Gym. They had low attends of students and the school close a few years ago. Some students went to Lawn School (Taylor County) and Coleman School (Coleman County)
Located on 6th Street Novice TX. Coleman County TX.
Hello,
Do you have a personal connection to this property? Do you have a link to the brochure talking about the new town?
I never lived in Novice. I had some kin folks that lived there by the name of Herring. I was raised in the south part of Coleman County. I went to school at Mozelle High School. The schools played sports against each other.
