Waverly, VA - intersection of US 460 and VA 40.

Dairy Queen used to be Big T Burger restaurant, before that, it was a diner. It is currently a laundromat. The Gulf Service Station, operated by Frank Barnette, on the lower right was later purchased by Bruce Gray andconverted to "The Tavern" restaurant. In the lower left, was "The Virginia Kernal" gas/service station that was run by Glenn Grammer. It is now McDonald's fast food restaurant. In the middle was Cootsie's Restaurant with its famous "Cootsie Burger." The "regulars" would meet here in the mornings for coffee and breakfast, and later in the day to catch up on the happenings in the town.

Glenn Grammar ran the Virginia Kernel service station and then he built his new building across the road.
Adams service station was between Cootsie Dunnington and Glenn new building. All of the above mentioned, were located at the same intersection.
We used to have a Peebles department store, Western Auto, Waverly Furniture, Presson & Warthan feed and seed store, A Southern States, 2 barber shops, Mavor Jewelry store, 2 dentist offices, Davis Chevrolet, The dime store, 2 grocery stores, and a movie theater all on Main Street.
It was a booming little town at one time.

I used to eat at Cootsies and watch Glenn Grammer swinging a sledge hammer on many a truck tire at the VA Kernel across the street. Quit eating at Cootsies after I got a raging case of salmonella from the legendary Cootsie Burger!
