Building at corner says "Neumann's Dairy - Cheese, Butter, Ice Cream". Location can also be seen in photo 11 of roll 26 from 1978 in Manitowoc County.

This cheese factory was operated by my parents, Bert F. and Gerry Zipperer. We bought it from Tony and Ramona Neumann, who had lived here and operated the factory from the 1920's till April, 1966. This photo is taken in the morning, as the clean milk cans are piled 3-high on the "can rack" behind the factory -- across from the 2 whey tanks. This was likely the only cheese factory that still bought milk from farmers in milk cans -- all other area factories stopped this in 1976 or earlier. We also had "bulk tank" farmers -- with the bulk truck room on the north end of the cheese factory. The original part of the cheese factory was built in 1887 (the part with the "Neumann's Dairy" sign on it, with the peaked roof) -- the middle part of the building (the "Making Room" with the 2 cheese vats) was added sometime later, along with the Intake Room where milk cans entered the factory (only a roof is visible of this section -- on the west side of the "making room"); and the "bulk truck room" was added in 1967. Sadly, my father died in 1984 and the factory ended cheese making at that time. Mom kept the factory going as a milk transfer station for milk cans till 1987. The entire building was torn down in September, 2012.

My husband's father and mother were owners Tony and Romona Neumann.

I rode on the school bus that picked up Marlene Neuman for high school at BHS. I don't recall which class her brother Roger was in. I played tuba in the Brillion City Band when her Dad, Tony Neuman played Baritone horn. I graduated from BHS in 1953.
