This is Wooten's River Service, Jeffersonville, IN, on the Ohio River - the towboat "Miss Ida" is in the front, near the center of the picture.

I believe this is the old Armstrong farm property, north of Jeffersonville in Clark County, near the intersection of Charlestown-New Albany Pike and Allison Lane. There is a new subdivision nearby called "Armstrong Farms". If anyone has better detailed info on this old farm and the history behind it, please add more comments here!

First house just north of the B & O railroad tracks and the Blackland Elevator, along Hwy 27 (now Lincoln Memorial Parkway). There also used to be another house located to the west of this house, behind the elevator, but it burned sometime in the 1980s or 1990s (?) If anyone knows when that other house burned, please add a comment here!

Farmstead in lower right of picture was owned by Pistorius. Looking Northwest, in the distance, toward the upper left hand side of the picture, is the Blackland elevator.

Farmstead of Norman Jordan and his wife Eleanor Jordan. They lived here beginning in 1948. This farmhouse is on the southwest corner of the intersection of Zion Chapel Road and S. Lincoln Memorial Parkway.

This house was where my Grandpa and Grandma (Tornie and Ruby Whitten) lived in from about 1960 until she passed away in 1972. He later got remarried, to Helen Harms (in 1976), and they continued to live in the house until sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The house and farm was eventually sold and they moved into Hillsboro. I have no idea who lives there now or how much it has changed. I do know the group of trees out in the field in the front (to the left of the long driveway) were pear trees, and they are no longer there.

This shows the old Blackland elevator which was closed in about 1982, and demolished in 1989 (Info from Norman Jordan, personal communication, 1999). This elevator was located on the west side of the road, along Hwy 27, now known as Lincoln Memorial Parkway. The old B&O RR is also long gone now. The section of railroad that passed by Blackland was built in 1901 by the Springfield & Decatur Railway; this particular stretch extending 26 miles between Boody and Derry Farm, Illinois, according to info on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Trains/ICC_valuations/Cincinnati,_Indianapolis_and_Western_Railroad#Corporate_History This railroad was later part of the Cincinnati, Indianapolis & Western Railroad, later, Indiana, Decatur & Western, and eventually became part of the B & O Railroad. The railroad was abandoned around 1977, and the tracks taken up in about 1981 or 1982.

We lived here as a youngster in the spring 1963 to April 1969 period, I'm the oldest of seven children. So this picture was taken a couple years after we had moved away to Tucson, AZ. I believe the residents at the time this pic was taken were Pistorius, possibly Gene Pistorius (?) This is located on Hwy 27 (Lincoln Memorial Parkway) in what is called "Blackland", a short distance south of the old Blackland elevator which was dismantled in 1989. You can see other views of this house including a view from 1967 by searching keywords "Whitten" or "Blackland". The two trees on the south side (left side of the pic) of this house were Maples with maroon-reddish leaves, which (from later research) I think were Schwedler or "Crimson King"-type Norway maples. The one toward the west is already dead, and the other one died a few years later.......it was almost dead when I drove by this house in 1979. As a "tree buff" even as a kid I was interested in what type of trees were in our yard. The tree to the immediate right of the car garage was a Black Cherry, and next to that was a Boxelder. Several other trees out of camera view to the right are Silver Maples, including two, side by side and located parallel to the road which are still there as of 2018. The large square garden spot is in front of the barn and appears to be tilled up in this picture. I can remember we used to have some asparagus coming up each year on one end of the garden, and also a row if Rhubarb plants growing along one side of the garden. I still LOVE rhubarb to this day! The old "burn barrels" were located to the right of the barn in picture. I remember my dad dumping our trash in it and setting it on fire every day or so.

I don't have info on past or present owners of this farm / property, but this can be seen in the distance looking north from I-64, close to Mile Marker 120, a short distance east of the Burnt Prairie exit (Exit 117). I had stopped there on June 10, 2017 just to take a picture of the magnificent specimen of Eastern Cottonwood (the tree to the immediate right, in front of house). The other tree (to the left) is no longer there. The house was evidently remodeled at some time in the past, as it looks somewhat different now (2017) than in 1981. UPDATE (Posted September 6, 2020): Yesterday I noticed from I-64 that the tall cottonwood tree was gone (it was tall enough to be seen from miles away), so I had to drive past and get a closer look... the house and tree are now completely gone, and the spot is now a thriving soybean field (this season anyway). Here's a link to a photo of the tree before it was cut down. This was taken June 10, 2017. https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_/photo/AF1QipOeEKD9HTkZrnqy6vOdZ3g4RbL8enwcizppnY0s
