St. Francis de Sales Catholic Parish, located at 135 S. Buesching Rd. in Lake Zurich started on June 27, 1948 as a mission territory, led by Fr. Joseph Firnbach, who was the assistant of St. Mary's Church in Buffalo Grove. The church was built in 1949. Ground was broken for a school in 1955. With the rapid growth of the parish community, a new church opened on January 21, 1990 that seated nearly 900 people. Their first pastor, Fr. Firnbach, remained close to the parish after his retirement and served almost 66 years of priesthood before his death in February 1990. Since beginning with 97 families in 1948, the parish currently serves over 4,250 families.
