This is actually Macoupin County, just east of Staunton. The Hi Cafe is featured in the book "Route 66 in Illinois". It opened in 1956 and survived about six months after Interstate 55 opened in 1977.
I have a connection, not from 60 years ago, but currently. We are the owners of one of the 2 businesses now in the cafe building. I would LOVE to find more old photos of the building. I'd like to do a photo collage out in the vestibule of the way things used to look when it was the cafe. Any help would be appreciated. This is the only photo I've been able to find so far.
Hi Roberta,
I looked through the search results for this property and did not see another shot. There is some unmapped film in this area. You may bet lucky looking through these rolls of film. https://vintageaerial.com/photos/illi...
The Hi-Cafe and Motel, and Standard service station, located along U. S. Route 66, Staunton, Illinois. View looks south. From an earlier post, this is actually Macoupin County, not McLean.
From a U. S. Route 66 website --
"Hi-Cafe site -- Also in Staunton was the Hi-Cafe, it opened in 1956 and was located south of the fork of the 1930-40 Route 66, along the later four-lane 66 at Hi-Cafe Rd. and W Frontage. The place belonged to Harold Hutchins and Frank Intahar (their initials named the cafe and the motel). When I-55 opened, it was cut off from its customers and closed in 1977. See this street view and this aerial photo taken in 1964, the old cafe building has been modified and now is a store, the motel on the south side, perpendicular to Route 66 was razed."
