This is 2433 Gurler Road, Ashton, in Lee County, right on the border between Lee and Ogle Counties. I lived there with my siblings as a child. My parents bought it around 1978 and still live there. The people who owned the house lived on 6 acres, but they subdivided when they sold the house to my parents: they sold the house and 3 acres to my parents, and they built a house next door (to the left) on the remaining 3 acres. The address of this house was Rural Route 1, South Line Road, Ashton, but later changed to its current address. It was a gravel road and there were still dirt roads nearby, can you imagine?! This house sits right before a bend in the road that caused many car accidents back then, I suppose due to loose gravel. I remember the occasional knock on our door, people asking to use the phone because they'd landed in the cornfield because they didn't realize that bend was there. There are more/different buildings in the photo than exist on the property today. My parents have remodeled the house inside and out, and the front door is now on a side not visible in the photo. The back door was not there when we moved in, but was instead on the back side of the addition to the house (darker roof color). During remodeling they reopened the back door visible in the photo. I could recognize this house immediately from the semi-circle driveway, which is also still there. I can see the small ditch in the easement in front of the house too, where a drainage pipe was laid and filled in sometime in the 80s or early 90s. In the 70s this house felt very remote - gravel and dirt roads all around. Today, no more gravel, and with nearby subdivisions closing in, it feels much less remote than it did back then. It was fun to look at this photo and have the opportunity to identify it!
