Charles and Christine Akerson Farm

I immediately saw the photo and knew immediately where it was before I saw the Akerson name and I said who posted that? That's my grandparents farm in north Maine. I was there in 2006 and some of the outbuildings were gone but I'd only been there like four or five times before we moved from New York to California in 1962 so I don't have a lot of the same memories that a lot of my cousins do. Memories!

Charles and Christine were our great grandparents, I have many fond memories of them, and visiting thier farm. As a young child my parents would take us there many Sundays for huge family fatherings where many relatives and lots of children gathered. I liked to play outside the most and the barn where they stacked the hay bales was a favorite place to climb and explore. I also liked to check out the cows, horses, and chicken coops in the lower level of the barn. Charles and Christine were very kind and gracious and the food at these family gatherings was plentiful. It makes me think of a Swedish smorgasbord, homegrown pickles, cheeses, crackers, and all kinds of homemade food was spread out all across thier large dining room table. It was a perfect place to come in and grab a few snacks to carry me over until lunch, while the women prepared the afternoon meal. After our great grandparents passed, our grandparents moved into this farmhouse and our families continued the family tradition of gathering there for years to come. My Dad would take me to the Farm all the time, I explored all the outbuildings, the apple orchard, the old cars out back, and learned to drive farm equipment and everything else around there that I could start. I took these farmyard driving skills and put them to use on future drives here with Dad. We would always stop into the general store in Colby and Dad would let me drive to the farm with a pillow under me so I could see. The funny thing about my Dad is he always stopped right on the steepest part of that hill and made me learn to take off with that 3 on the tree manual shift, which was a challenge for a 10 year old boy. Our frequent trips to the farm were a favorite of mine, because I knew Dad would let me drive, and I loved to going to the Farm. Dad also liked to take me flying in his 46 Taylorcraft Airplane to the farm and he usually buzzed the farm once or twice before he landed in the field, so I have very vivid aerial views of the farm from my younger days. This farm and the memories of my ancestors and relatives will forever hold a special place in my heart.
I was named after my great grandfather, Charles John Akerson and named my son Charles John Akerson II, he goes by CJ. My son named his first son Charles John Akerson III and he goes by Charlie. Charlie has a little brother, his name is Henry.

For those who knew my great grandfather, I hear his nickname was Charlie, I never really called him that as a child, to me he was always my great Grandfather !!!

All I have for an address is Tupper Road, Perham, Maine. I do have the following for a location:
46° 54' 04.99" N Latitude
68° 11' 43.69" W Longitude
Elevation: 798'

Charles and Christine are my grandparents. I'm assuming from your name that John Akerson is your grandfather, and if so he's my mother's (Martha Genevieve Akerson Jones) brother.

Chuck, I have heard of some of our Grandfathers siblings and Martha rings a bell and so does your name, but don't believe we ever met in our younger days at the Farm. I use to go there all the time, it was my favorite place to go !!
I remember my grandparents very well, use to eat lunch with them all the time, while up there with my family, or when it was just Dad and I.

I still visit Maine once or twice a year, was just there a few weeks ago and drove by the farm as I reminisced about our younger days on the farm. The trees by the road block a lot of the view these days, but the house still stands, a true testament to the swedish craftsmen who built these farms.

When I was back there in 2006, a couple of my cousins (Maxine - Aunt Lula's daughter) and Enola ( Aunt Myrtle's daughter) took me out to the farm and the owner let us go through the house. They're really wasn't much that I remembered. I mean it was 1962 when we moved from NY to CS when I was twelve, which was the last time before 2006 that i was there. My mother - Martha and father moved from Maine to the Utica ,NY area in about 1945/1946, then we moved to northern California in 1962. So in the twelve years that I lived in NY I was probably only in the farm four or five times.

I would say my earliest times to visit the farm would be around 1962, or 1963, and I would've been 2 or 3 years old. I definately remember visiting my great grandparents ( Charles and Christine ) before they past and the home was beautiful inside, definately remember the staircase leading to the upstairs as a child., I thought the farm house was big and beautiful with nice wood work throughout.

I live across the road from this house. The house and garage are still there. The barn to the left fell down about 18 years ago and the rubble is still laying there from it. The barn in the back is gone.

Joseph - I appreciate the information. We were there in 2006 and I seem to remember that the barn was now at that time.
