Caribou, ME S. Main St.

Set the location.

This is Northern Sales and Service a car dealership that was very good in the early days. I bought my first car there a Chevrolet Biscayne.

Jeffs place

Northern Sales and Service was the Cadillac-Oldsmobile-GMC dealership. They also sold Packard and took on Chevrolet around 1956 when Pierson's closed. They sold Fiats around 1970 and were also the Honda motorcycle dealership. It was owned by Abraham Etscovits whose family also owned car dealerships in Presque Isle, Houlton, Fort Kent and Bar Harbor.

My husbands' dad Joe Bourgoin worked there. He started as a mechanic and worked his way up to Service Manager. Retired in the late 60's or early 70's.

The name was mispelled. The name is Etscovitz. Don't worry. It's a tough name to spell. I
bought a 1930's raccoon coat from Joe Bourgoin that belonged to his father. Evidently his father had two coats and wore this the least. I found out why after I had broken it in...one side is a bit larger than the other. Joe's dad wore it in the winter driving his tractor as there were no cabs available to cover the driver. I paid $75 for it. My sister in Nashua, NH. Come up with the $75 and it belongs to you again.

My father, Edgar Gagnon, bought this dealership from Abraham Etscovitz in the early 1980s. He worked at this dealership over 40 years. My brothers Gregg and Mike both sold cars there and I worked there in summer time during my college years. Dad sold the GM franchise to Carroll's Auto Sales and the building to Jeff Robertson of Beaulieu:s Garage in mid 1990s.

In the 70's when Chevy's were the #1 selling car, my father Danny Brewer who bot neighboring Caribou Dodge in 1974, said he witnessed one winter, salesman at Northern Sales handing keys to prospective customers along with a snowbrush for the customer
to clear the snow off the new car themselves as the salesman sat in the showroom.
Those were good days for Chevy,Olds, & Caddy.
Though the 70's marked the beginning of GM's decline due to it being run by accountants instead of car
guys, I am very happy to see GM's impressive revival led by a true car gal Mary Barra. Pride in American made has returned to what it was when Northen Sales flourished!
ps Dad bot me a Honda ATC 70 3-wheeler from Northern Sales in 1973, i liked riding it on 2 wheels.

My Dad, John Cyr Sr, sold cars here from the 1950's into the early 70's. And, I worked here summers all the way through high school and college. It was one of the biggest dealerships in Northern Maine. Edgar Gagnon was my uncle. I remember it well.

I remember when dick etscovitz sold cars there l was a littie kid backk then living at plourdes apartments thats were I met him and his wife joannie at the time there great people it is now beaulieaus garage and body shop

Was Abraham escovitz Harry's brother?
