This is the home of Allen and Virginia Van Horn, as well as three sons and two daughters. This forty acre section was bought by Allen to add to the acreage owned by his father George to the East of this picture, and increased the farm ground their partnership operated. This picture was taken a year after Allen had lost the farm to bankruptcy, complicated by PBB contamination of the feed, high interest rates, a crop embargo by the Carter adminstration, and high leveraged loans to complete the upgrading of the dairy facilities and the expansion of the dairy herd. Presently the old timber frame barn to the left is long gone, the house recently razed, and the roof structure of the large free stall barn is collapsing. The farm was bought by Roland Bishop, who also has passed. The silos were sites of yearly fireworks viewing, with up to 17 local displays visible. They also hosted vertical races to the top by competitive brothers and friends. The farm is on 40th Street, south of Baseline road and south of 1st Avenue, with the old address of Route 1, Box 101, Bloomingdale, MI(Van Buren County) The woods to the back of the picture grew wild grapes, wild huckleberries to the right rear, and strong memories for myself and my siblings

I have connections with the farm directly across the road, and it was Allen's father George who owned it. I'm trying to find that photo.

My history there was from '86 to '93. I also knew Roland, who bought the place. He started dairy farming not long before we did.

Sadly, all that remains of this farm are the bold blue silos and just a small portion of the south side of the barn in front of the silos. Same for the Van Horn farm across the street, no buildings remain and the site has been reclaimed by nature.
