"Meachland", the Eugene Babcock farm on the north side of SR 162 just west of Quarry Rd, Rochester. The large farm of several hundred acres was settled in the early 1800s by Orrin Meach, Mr Babcock's great-great uncle. In 1902 Jarvis Meach untied his ropes and ran off four ne'er-do-wells bent on robbing the farm. The neighbors presented Jarvis with a gun which Babcock still owned in the 1950s.
The house would be 200 years old today, but alas, it seems to have been torn down in the past few years. The barn - described as a landmark by the Wellington Enterprise - remains.
Featured in the Wellington Enterprise as a "Mystery Farm" in 1958. This series of articles had a brief history and an aerial photo of each farm. Thanks to Cindy Kurpely of the Rochester Historical Society for providing the article. Search the Lorain County main page for "mystery" to see other farms featured.
