,Peter Matteson built this home in the same decade as the Revolutionary War was fought. His father was a French and Indian War veteran and was awarded "a claim" to property by Benning Wentworth the governor of New Hampshire. The governor of New York disputed this saying he had the right to govern the area. The "New Yorkers" who lived in Albany(mostly rich Dutch farmers or fur traders) laid claim to the same land. Based on inaccurate assumptions by N.Y. and N.H. governors. We were not a colony at that point and only became the 14th colony after the revolution. We "were a separate country up to that point". Peter Matteson and family owned the property until 1920-30. This is when Beatrice Claflin Breese purchased the property.
Hi Donald! Thank you for sharing the fascinating history of Peter Matteson and his property. It's always amazing to learn about the rich stories behind these old aerial photos. I'm curious, do you have any memories or stories of growing up in Bennington County, VT? It would be great to hear if anything has changed since this photo was taken in 1989.
