The property was first owned by Michael C. Wirtz, Sr. (1833-1901) and Caroline (Hapke) Wirtz (1828-1918). He was born in Germany, arriving in New York before moving to Chicago and came to Fremont in 1853, married, held office of township supervisor and other prominent offices. Michael's grandson, Arthur Michael Wirtz was a successful businessman in Chicago and owner of the Chicago Stadium, Olympia Stadium (Detroit), Bismarck Hotel (Chicago), Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls. Arthur was the father of William "Bill" Wirtz and grandfather of William "Rocky" Wirtz.
