Shopping mall built on site of old Raleigh Municipal Airport, first location for scheduled flights into Raleigh. Runways are visible behind shops

South Wilmington St Near the intersect of Tryon Rd. Raleigh N.C.

This was built in 1964. I remember it as the King's Store and it has been several things since. It is now known as Chapanoke Square. The address is 3210 S. Wilmington St.

In the front is the Watchovia Bank and Trust.

Winn Dixie

Auto Center on the right end

Clay Casey was the branch manager of the Wachovia bank there. I was in line for the Grand Opening of the King's Store.I wanted the 10 speed bike and was there at the door all night. But the sunbeam bread man supplying the snack bar got the hook-up and the bike. Even talked to the N and O but to no avail!!!!!

I had an aunt that worked at King's. She used to take me and her daughter to work with her somedays. I can remember hearing a DC-3 flying overhead. It was close and therefore, LOUD!

Winn Dixie, my first paying job other than cutting yards, finding and selling pop bottles and selling found golf balls 😊 Also was a member of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Squadron that met at the airport seen in the background. The Senior Squadron also met there and their yellow observation aircraft was tethered there 😊

It looks like the airport is a subdivision these days. What are the Civil Air Patrol's duties?

Your question was directed to Mr. Hodge, hope y'all don't mind if I interject a comment.
The Civil Air Patrol is an aircraft search and rescue group affiliated with the U.S. Air Force. (Air Force style uniforms and rank.)They would search and locate missing small aircraft. Some squadrons also searched for missing persons in wilderness areas. I was a CAP member for 4 years. CAP Cadets were from age 13 to 18. Seniors: anything beyond age 18.
Here is a link to an excellent write-up of the history of the Raleigh airport. From it's inception to it's present day housing neighborhood.
