Home of Jerry Brasee
In 1956 this was the home of Lynn and Loretta Brasee along with their 4 sons, Leroy, Edwin, Jerry and John. Lynn purchased the farm from his aunt, Ruth Ryder in 1951.They kept a herd of 30 Holstein cows. When Brasee took over the soil had been depleted and he went into a program of adding lime and fertilizer to rebuild the soil in 5 years. He started a crop rotation of oats, hay and corn and did not need to buy additional feed for the herd.
In 1956 the farm had been under plow for 135 years. Early tile making took place here and tiles dated 1861 have been found. The round tiles were flat on one side for better drainage. It is hard to correlate this photo with the one from the 1956 article as it appears there was another house on the right.
The farm is located on the west side of Rt 58 at Hallauer Rd. If you look closely you can make out a bit of the Pittsfield cemetery in the lower left corner although it is under the "VA" in the logo.
